Crops grown in jammu and kashmir

1) Rice : 

Rice is the main staple food of kashmiris , cultivation of rice requires hot and moist climate.
  Rice is a kharif  crop and is sown in April, May and harvested in Autumn . Sufficient water must cover the fields. 
    The valley of kashmir is famous as the 'Rice Bowl'. The tehsil of Ranbir singh pura (R.S pura) in Jammu is world famous for Basmati rice. 
  Rice is grown mostly in the districts of Jammu , Anantnag, Kulgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Srinagar, Pulwama and Kathua. 

2) Wheat :

Wheat is the daily bread of the people of jammu. It is a rabi crop and its plants requires cool and moist climate  in the beginning and warm and dry weather at harvesting time. 
    The minimum rainfall should be between 50 to 70 cm and that too at routine basis. 
   Important wheat producing are Kathua, R.S pura, Samba and Reasi. 


3). Maize :

  Maize is an important cereal crop in jammu and kashmir. It requires hot dry climate, rainfall requires for maize requires from 75 cm to 125 cm. 
  It is sown in May to july and harvested in August to November . 
 Maize in J&k is cultivated on karewas lands in the valley of kashmir , while as, in jammu region , Rajouri, Doda, Poonch, and udhampur are leading maize producing areas. 


4) Tobacco :

 Tobacco requires a warm and moist climate and a rich soil containing lime. 
  It is mostly grown in the valley of kashmir as the soil is suitable for tobacco. 


5) Oil Seeds : 

  Oil seeds require hot and moist climate .in  kashmir region  oil seeds are grown almost in all areas, but the chief oil seeds producing areas are Anantnag and Srinagar. 
   6700 acre areas in kashmir region produces oil seeds. 
   Rape seed, mustard, linseed, Sesamum , toria and cotton seeds are the main varieties of oil seeds. 

6) Pulses :

 Hot and dry climate of J&k is suitable for  pulses cultivation. Pulses are largely grown on small patches of land and the pulses of kashmir are  well known for their quality. 
   In j&k Rajmash  are grown in Doda , Bhadarwah, Rajouri and Poonch . 

7) Saffron :

  Saffron (crocus sativus) possessing innumerable medical and aromatic properties is a significant cash crop of Jammu and Kashmir. 
     It is sown in pampore  in kashmir region and kistwar and Bhadarwah in Jammu region.  In pampore about 3000 acres are under saffron cultivation while very small quantity is produced elsewhere.  
    Locally saffron is known as Zaffron  in kashmir. 


National Mission on Saffron
    Saffron cultivation in kashmir has been facing a threat  of extinction as the production ,  productivity and the quality of this world famous spice has declined. 
   In order to adress this issue, the central government launched National Mission on Saffron (NMS) with the aim to give boost to Saffron cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir. 
   The mission envisages various components for the economic revival of Jammu and Kashmir. 

8) Sugar cane :

    Sugar cane  is sown in Akhnoor ,  Kathua R. S pura areas of Jammu region . It does not grow in kashmir as it requires hot climate 

9) Tea : 

 Tea is grown on the slopes of katra and Basantgarh areas of Jammu region. 


10)  Jawar and Bajra : 

   It is grown as fooder for animals. Main areas for cultivation of Jawar and Bajra are Kandi , Samba , Kathua, Hiranagar of Jammu region

11)Fruits : 

   Apples, pears, cherries, plums, pomegranates ,  mulberries, peaches, apricots, walnuts, and Almonds are grown in kashmir valley. 
     Mangoes, Guavas, bananas, oranges, and black berries are grown in the plains of Jammu region. 
     In Ladakh UT, apricots, grapes, and walnuts are grown.
